Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said his party believes in true sense of democracy and that’s why it frequently becomes the victim of conspiracy.
“Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina fell victims to conspiracy repeatedly as they believed in true sense of democracy. That’s why Awami League also becomes the victim of conspiracy again and again,” he said.
Quader, also Road Transport and Bridges Minister, stated this after paying tributes to Suhrawardy by placing wreaths at his grave at Teen Netar Mazar (mausoleum of three leaders) near Doyel Chattar in the capital, marking his 54th death anniversary.
Suhrawardy was one of the most powerful political leaders of the Indian sub-continent and also a mentor to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect of independent Bangladesh.
Quader said Bangladesh practices democratic norms and values and that’s why Commonwealth Parliamentary Union (CPU) and Inter Parliamentary Association (CPA) conferences were held here.
Lauding the country’s democratic values, he said representatives of different parliamentary democratic countries joined the two conferences.
About the BNP’s absence in the last parliament election, the Awami League general secretary said BNP made a mistake by not taking part in the election. “But it never means that it is a fault in democracy,” he added.
Blaming that BNP carried out killings, arson attacks, sabotage and violent activities and damaged government properties to halt the last general election, he said such violent acts can never be an instance of democratic movement.
About the upcoming parliamentary election, Quader said: “We want that the next election would be a competitive one with participation of newer alliances.”
Earlier, Quader along with central leaders of the party placed wreaths at the grave of Suhrawardy.
AL Advisory Council Member Mozaffar Hossain Paltu, Organising Secretaries Ahmed Hossain and AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, Cultural Affairs Secretary Asim Kumar Ukil, Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, Information and Research Secretary Advocate Afzal Hossain, Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, Forest and Environment Affairs Secretary Delwar Hossain and Agriculture and Cooperatives Secretary Faridunnahar Laily were, among others, present on the occasion.
Later, Awami Jubo League, Bangladesh Chhatra League, Awami Sechchhasebak League, Krishak League, Jatiya Sramik League, Mahila Awami League and different associate bodies paid homage to Suhrawardy.
